Social Networks, from the 80s to the 00s

As Facebook enjoys its moment in the sun, we should take a moment to step back and look at the history of computers and social communication. Some historical perspective is in order, both to assess the real value of social networks as businesses, and to anticipate how they are likely to evolve in the future.

I’ve been using the Internet since 1988, and have been using various commercial online services such as CompuServe, Prodigy and GEnie since I had my first computer. A lot of things that could be described as social networks have come and gone in that time.

Peer-to-peer network invites drivers to get connected

The name BitTorrent has become part of most people's day-to-day vernacular, synonymous with downloading every kind of content via the internet's peer-to-peer networks. But if a team of US researchers have their way, we may all be talking about CarTorrent in the not too distant future.

Researchers from the University of California Los Angeles are working on a wireless communication network that will allow cars to talk to each other, simultaneously downloading information in the shape of road safety warnings, entertainment content and navigational tools.

Teaching Blog Intro

This semester I am teaching IST 759, Planning and Designing Digital Library Services. This is the capston course for the certificate in Digital Libraries. The purpose of this blog is to share the issues related to using a virtual server environment and open source software to allow students to create participatory library services.

    Koha

We will be using a CPanel/WHM environment in conjunction with Koha installations hosted by LibLime , and finally EPrints. The Information Institute of Syracuse is hosing the CPanel and EPrints application. I would especially like to thank LibLime for hosting installations of Koha for library science instruction. This is a great opportunity for library students to use this software (see full article about it here ).

Since this is a new method for teaching digital library services, my hope is that this blog will encourage other library science faculty to try using this new technology in their classes as well.

Participatory Exploration - Nasa investigates virtual space

AstronautThe virtual world would be aimed at students and would "simulate real Nasa engineering and science missions".

The agency has published a "request for information" (RFI) from organisations interested in developing the platform.

Nasa believe the game would help find the next generation of scientists and engineers needed to fulfil its "vision for space exploration". "A high quality synthetic gaming environment is a vital element of Nasa's educational cyberstructure," the RFI reads. "The MMO will foster career exploration opportunities in a much deeper way than reading alone would permit and at a fraction of the time and cost of an internship program."

The agency hopes that the environment could one day be used to allow the public to take part in virtual missions.

"We at Nasa are working hard to create opportunities for what I might call participatory exploration," the director of the project, Simon Worden, has said.
