The Smartest Futurist On Earth

(Fortune Magazine) -- If you went around saying that in a couple of decades we'll have cell-sized, brain-enhancing robots circulating through our bloodstream, or that we'll be able to upload a person's consciousness into a computer, people would probably question your sanity. But if you say things like that and you're Ray Kurzweil, you get invited to dinner at Bill Gates' house - twice - so he can pick your brain for insights on the future of technology. The Microsoft chairman calls him a "visionary thinker and futurist."

Everything will be subject to his Law of Accelerating Returns, Kurzweil says, because "everything is ultimately becoming information technology." As we are able to reverse-engineer and decode our own DNA, for instance, medical technology can be converted to bits and bytes and zoom along at the same fantastic rate. That will enable overlapping revolutions in genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics. Which is how you end up with nanobots living in your brain.

When Does a Social Network Become a "Publicity Network"?

Over the last week or so, Robert Scoble has mentioned several times that Facebook currently limits him to 5,000 "friends" and that the limit should be lifted. If we check his Twitter account, currently he has 6,500 friends. This discussion is not specifically about Robert but since he is the most vocal, I will use him as the post example. While Robert "friends" everyone who friends him, can he really follow each person's conversation? With 6,000 people on Twitter, let's assume 10% are active and post 3 messages a day, that's 1800 messages per day to keep track of, not taking into account sleep/work/family time. I do see Robert reply to some messages on Twitter (no idea about Facebook) which is great, but is Twitter really more of a publicity networking tool for Robert rather than a social network (one which he uses very efficiently)?

How To Write A Web 2.0 Glossary

This link takes a look at the serious and not so serious vocabulary surrounding the Web 2.0 phenomenon.

blogging humor web 20

Dave Winer did a good job of showing us the basic flaw of using Web X.0 jargon. Sometimes we get so caught up in the genius of each new turn of phrase that we forget to ask ourselves what we are really talking about. The usual answer, “not much at all.” Social Graph is certainly not the first, nor is it the only word that has been pulled into the digerati’s lexicon in recent years. Lets explore a few more.

Turn E-mail Into a Social Network Hub

Turn Gmail (or any E-mail Account) Into a Social Network Hub

There's been a lot of chatter about the entire concept of social graphing. I have no idea if there is validity here or not. And certainly people smarter than I am are talking about the potential viability of the entire concept.

However, what I do know is that a lot of us are increasingly participating in social networks and we need a way to track it all. Also, most of us are hooked on email too. So, the good news is you can easily combine these addictions (um I mean "tools") to your advantage.

Use Gmail to post to Social Nets

Let's face it, life is busy. Who has time to go to a site, log in and post something new. SInce I already spend a tremendous amount of time inside Gmail, I have rigged it so I can easily post directly to the social nets where I choose participate. In my case, this consists of Twitter and Facebook. It's simple.
